Happy Earth Day

It's Earth Day so I figured I'd make a post. I have a youtube account where I keep a video log of my garden's progress. I started it last year. Here is my latest video showing my veggies.

I also have some pictures to share and I shall put those behind the cut.

This year has been very unusual for me in that I've had female flowers appear first on my gourd family plant. This is a beautiful Hubbard Squash female. It's say I may lose my first one because there are not males around to fertilize her. It's so huge! I love it.

Here is the view from above.

Here are lots of male buds and a few females too. Hopfully they'll all open together.

I love taking pictures at ground level. I call these the Squash Forest. It must be fun to be a bug and walk though this forest. There's a gourd on the side.

Another view of the Squash Forest. There's a gourd on the right.

I'm thrilled to see a female Ball Luffa flower for the first time. Last year all of these died as seedlings and sprouting them was difficult. This year it's going much better. I hope to get lots of little luffas out of these.

And after making the video I found this tiny cuke hiding behind a big leaf. My first one and it's probably edible now. I really want to make pickles this year. That would be fun and I've never done it before.

Have you done Luffas before? I was embarassed that I didn't even know that they were plants until this year. The idea of growing them sounds very interesting. I'm sure that I could google the process and learn a bit more.

Yes, I grew some last year. Don't feel bad. Lots of people think they are sea sponges and it's an easy mistake to make. The normal luffas are easy to grow. Plant them the way you would a cucumber and trellis it. They like rich soil and lots of sun light. They have pretty yellow male and female flowers that bees will pollinate. Once the luffa forms let it dry out on the vine. Once it's light and you hear it rattle it's ready to pick. This is likely after the vine has dried. Then you can peel the hard skin and there are fibers and lots of black seeds inside.

Thanks for that info, I may need to try one. Yep thought they were from the Sea! DOH. Enjoyed your Video. Making me wish that Denver would warm up more but we're on our way.

No prob. And thanks for watching my video. Hopefully things will warm up for you soon. BTW, there's a nice page on how to peel a luffa.

There are lots of useful links there too about growing them.

Where do you live that you have such a garden in April. I can't plant until after May 15th, and I live in New Mexico. I do live at 7500 feet above sea level though. Gets pretty cold at night. People consider where I live the high desert, although it seldom ever gets to 100 degrees in the daylight in summer. Summer nights are about 45 degrees. Winter temps can go as low as -10.
