Cheap Weed Killer????

Someone was asking for a cheap easy weed killer the other day, so when I heard about this, I thought I better post it here.

I heard today that undiluted household ammonia will kill weeds and do it within a few hours. You can apply it with a spray bottle or with a paint brush (don't use spray on a windy day because it will drift everywhere).

My bit of college Chemistry suggests to me this might really work and goodness knows a bottle of ammonia is cheap enough. If nothing else, I THINK the ammonia would be a bit safer to use than commercial weedkiller as long as you don't breathe the fumes. I'm going to try it and see for myself if this really works. If anyone else feels like trying this, please let me know how it turns out for you.

lol, I doubt if I'll risk all the fumes any time soon. but thanks. Boiling water works too.

Nothing in this world is ever perfect.
Boiling water also gets rid of fire ants and burglars.

burglars, yeah so does a well aimed wasp spray, it sprays 17 feet.

Better pray it isn't just some kid wandering around...

Just saying that's a pretty fucked up weapon to unleash on someone.

Not that I won't keep it in mind, but I wouldn't think of spraying unless the target was clearly identified.

My concern about ammonia is what it will do to the soil. Is there any info on that?

The ammonia is SUPPOSED to evaporate and be gone in just a few days.
Most weedkillers hang around a while.
BTW--The idea is to use the smallest amount possible but still get the job done. You don't go out with a gallon of the stuff and just dump it on the weed.
:]

Well, of course you don't. But pure ammonia is pretty intense stuff and it does leave a residue, on the weed in any case, so you would still have to pull them up. It IS easier when they're dead though.

But yeah, try it and let us know how it goes.

Plants eat two sources of nitrogen. One of them is ammonium. As long as it gets diluted by watering or heavy rain it should be fine.

What's the other source of nitrogen--if ammonium is one of the two?

With boiled water I know I am not adding anything to the soil that may harm things I don't want harmed.

OTOH, you're killing all the helpful microbes in your soil with the boiling water. No solution is perfect :/

Re: Something even cheaper...
Boiling water kills only for a short time, and then the critters come back - I don't think that's going to happen with ammonia. It's very toxic besides, which water isn't. :/

The heat from the boiling water will kill everything living that it comes into contact with, but once that's gone, it's okay.

Using water they'll come back in no time - with ammonia I'm not so sure. :/

You could urinate on the weeds, but unless it's your morning urine it'll probably be too dilute and simply work as a fertilizer.

Just sayin.

I haven't tried ammonia, but vinegar works fairly well and the ph resets in about three days. I haven't found it effective with larger weeds but it gets the tender young/small ones, which is nice if you have an area that's coming up with a mat of weed seedlings. Recipe I use is a gallon of vinegar, a tall bottle of lemon juice and a little squirt of dish detergent in my sprayer - some recipes have salt in them as well, I wouldn't use it tho' as it stays in the soil.

I've been thinking about this.
Perhaps on your larger, tougher weeds you might like to try using straight vinegar that's been boiled down a bit to make it stronger. One thing for sure; it would definitely lower the pH (make it more acid).
Adding the liquid soap is a good idea since it helps the acid cling better.
