It's Hugelbeet NOT Hugelkultur !!!!

Leeneh did me a big favor!
She's the one who set me straight on the correct name of the European style of raised garden bed I've been so frustrated in trying to find information on. Turns out that its correct name is
"Hügelbeet" and not "Hugelkultur". Small wonder I wasn't getting more than one or two hits!
Once I typed in "Hügelbeet" I started finding all sorts of articles in German. Google "translated" them for me but DID NOT put them into proper English. I spent quite a while puzzling over some bits and pieces and even got a few laughs.
Thank Heaven these articles generally came with detailed diagrams as those cleared up any remaining questions I had.

Now all I gotta do is get my hands on some tree trimmings!
I've got plenty of leaves stockpiled and I have a source of barnyard...!

Ooh, fascinating! I saw it called "hugelkultur" in the permaculture books I read, but I was sad at the lack of google results too!

You will find plenty under Hugelbeet. Good luck with the Google translations.

Is this a specifically German tradition? I've never heard of it here in the UK. Perhaps it suits German growing conditions, or crop preferences... I look forward to your description when you have a chance to write that.

I don't see why it wouldn't be good for UK conditions too.
I'll be making a journal entry on it later this evening.

How is this bed different from the American version?

The few entries under "Hugelkultur" just dumped a bunch of dirt on top of tree trimmings. (These were all American.)

The German ones that came up when I googled "Hugelbeet" were quite different. They weren't haphazardly built. I'll going to do a journal entry on it.
