I really do get antsy to start mucking around with new things when it is 8F outside. I read about "compost gardening" again last week when I was looking for information about something else. Here we have 3 romaine lettuce roots and a fennel. The lettuce is definitely starting to take off. Not so sure about the fennel. They are sitting in 1/2 an inch of tap water that gets changed out every other day. Read more...Collapse )
Here are next year's pineapple plant and the year afters, too. Pineapples are easy to grow, just lop the top off, let it dry out for a day or so (some people core out the leafy bit, but not me), and stick it in some potting soil. Be careful not to overwater. In fact, judicious inattention is desirable.

Repot as necessary. As you can see, I start small and work up every six months or so. When they're urn size, that's when the fun starts. Keep them warm. They die under 40F. They probably quit growing sooner than that. After frost is well and truly gone, put them in the warmest and sunniest spot you have and guard the fruit from deer.
